I haven't added a post under my Salon Chair tag in quite a while. Today's post talks about the two biggest culprits of unhealthy hair and what you can do to fix them. Enjoy!
Porosity
--What it is: the ability for hair to hold water
--What it means: You may think hair holding water would be healthy because the ability to retain water sounds "moisturizing". But when it comes to hair, only porous hair holds water.
Porosity
--What it is: the ability for hair to hold water
--What it means: You may think hair holding water would be healthy because the ability to retain water sounds "moisturizing". But when it comes to hair, only porous hair holds water.
Porous Hair = Unhealthy Hair!
--How do I know if my hair is porous?:
- Your hair is colored and/or lightened (bleached)
- You heat style your hair when it's not fully dry
- You chemically treat your hair with relaxers
- Test it: take a strand of hair and place it in a cup of water. Does it sink or float? Sink = porous. Float = Non-porous
--How do I fix it?:
- Porous hair means that parts of the cuticle are raised and open. Those are the scale-like pieces we see on hair when it's under a microscope.
- So to repair the cuticle, you can invest in a keratin treatment to help add structure back to the hair.
- You can also invest in deep conditioning treatments to help restore moisture to your dried out strands.
- You can also cut back on the coloring, bleaching, and heat styling to allow your hair to repair itself.
Breakage
--What it is: hair that breaks off mid strand and/ or numerous split ends. Breakage results in what you might call "baby hairs".
--What it means: The average person loses about 100 hairs a day. If you are losing more, then breakage might be the culprit.
Breakage = Buh bye hair!
--How do I know if my hair has breakage?
- The amount of hair you lose on a daily basis is excessive
- The ends of your hair always look ragged, even after trimming
- The amount of "baby hairs" you have around your forehead or at the nape of your neck is quite a bit
--How do I fix it?:
- Breakage occurs because the cortex of the hair is weak. This can be caused by a poor diet or not getting the right amount of vitamins. Be sure to eat foods that contain Omega-3's and fatty oils found in avocados and fish.
- Taking biotin can significantly improve the strength of your hair. It is a vitamin that is taken daily.
- Repairing the cuticle of your hair (see above) will ensure that the cortex of your hair won't be damaged further. Deep condition and avoid heat styling.
Breakage and porosity are the two biggest reasons why many people have unhealthy hair. Learning what they are and how to fix them will ensure you have the best hair possible! If you have any questions, shoot me an email!

Great tips, Toni. Thanks! I've heard about/seen Biotin and hadn't paid too much attention but I'm thinking I might invest in it now. Do you use it and have you noticed a difference?
Thanks again :)

Thanks for sharing these tips Toni! Fortunately for me, I don't have to color my hair so that has done wonders for the health of my hair. I also take Biotin and Vitamin B tablets which are supposed to help your skin, hair & nails. Also, I try to extend the time between washing/styling my hair. I used to wash/style every day and have extended it to 5 days and it has helped me maintain healthier hair.

Hey girl! I have used Biotin before and it helped significantly. There was a period when I was younger and i lost a lot of weight. My hair was excessively falling out and i started taking biotin to help. It really did improve the strength of hair. It's very inexpensive too. You can find it at Wal Mart. :)
That's awesome! I have also extended the time between washings because my hair is bleached and it can get very dried out. You do have lovely hair. :)
i had no idea! great post... Xo Megan, www.TfDiaries.com

I've definitely noticed a lot more hair falling out ... like everywhere! it's awful. Definitely don't have a bad diet but maybe neglecting some vitamins :/ thanks for the tips lady!

hmm, interesting. it looks like having the ability to hold water actually damages the hair...by causing raised cuticles? my cup is filled with coffee now so I'll try the test as soon as I finish haha. I'm pretty sure my hair is unhealthy so I'm anticipating instant sinkage lol! :( thanks for all the tips Toni! <3
Yes. The raised cuticles make shine less apparent, cause your color to fade faster, and allow more damage to the cortex of your hair (the inner part). You can tell the difference between hair with a raised cuticle and a closed cuticle. Try the water trick! It's kind of cool! :)
I wonder if that Biotin can help hair from falling out. My hair comes out in handfuls. I can't believe I have any left!

Biotin is mainly to help strengthen hair, but not really prevent it from falling out. What you should ask yourself is: how good is your diet? Are you eating enough fats? The lipids in fat actually help your hair. Are you under a lot of stress? Stress can seriously wreak havoc on your hair. If you have tried everything and it's still falling out, there is a brand of hair products out there called Nioxxin and it helps rebuild the proteins in hair to keep it from breaking. It also stimulates the cells in your roots to start producing new growth from the hair follicles. Give it a try! :)
Great post! I've noticed my hair has horrible split ends and it's been driving me crazy. I'm definitely going to look into Biotin and get a deep conditioner.
This was seriously helpful! I know I've got bad split ends, so the tips on fixing that are just what I needed
